  • With an employment multiplier of 2.0, each employment in the German SDI creates two additional jobs in Germany.

The business sector as an employer

  • With 57.000 EUR the individual average annual payment was nearly 62 percent above the average level of the German economy.
  • In total, the SDI paid 7.7 bn. EUR in 2014 in direct salaries. Through indirect and induced effects, additional 8.5 bn. EUR in salaries, wages and contributions to the social system were created in other sectors of the German economy.

The sector’s role as part of the German economy

  • The SDI purchased products for 13.1 bn. EUR from other industry sectors for the production of security goods
  • With a share of nearly 24 percent, the highest indirect Value Added was created in the IT and IT-services sectors
  • In addition to the indirect value added effects, the SDI created 32.000 indirect employments in the IT sector.

Key Findings of the R&D Report

  • Nine out of ten SDI companies pursue their own Research & Development (R&D) or assign Research & Development (R&D) efforts.
  • With an average R&D intensity of 7.1 percent (in relation to turnover) in 2014, the SDI qualifies as a “high tech sector” (“Spitzentechnologie”).
  • Since 2012 over 91 percent of the SDI companies have introduced innovations / innovative products to the market.
  • About 63 percent of the companies in the sector develop their innovations in R&D cooperation with companies from other industry sectors, thereby showing the multitude of linkages and interdependencies of the sector with the general economy.
